The body (not the head) is submerged into cold water at a set temperature following exercise, for a specific period of time. There are several benefits that have been associated with cold water therapy, including pain relief, reduced inflammation, and vasoconstriction. The latter is the narrowing of the blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to muscles that have suffered damage or inflammation as a result of exercise.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Mr Afik is a regular practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which is a combat sport and self-defence martial art based on ground fighting, grappling and submission holds. The sport focuses on participants taking their opponent to the ground before attempting to gain a dominant position and using a variety of techniques to force them to submit. Examples of these techniques are chokeholds, joint locks and compression locks. A key concept of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is that a weaker, smaller participant may successfully defend themselves against a stronger, heavier and bigger opponent using weight distribution and leverage, and the training can be deployed in sport grappling and self-defence scenarios.

Meditation
Meditation is an activity that is also practiced by Mr Afik as part of his daily routine. One of the many benefits of meditation is the positive effect it can have on the brain, with research suggesting it can even alter the practitioner’s grey matter. Regularly practicing meditation may help to preserve aging brains and decrease activity in the area of the brain responsible for self-referential thoughts and mind-wandering. By helping to reduce rumination, this can have a quieting, calming effect. Meditation may also be highly effective in countering the effects of depression and anxiety and even provide relief for those suffering from social anxiety.
